Harvest Monday 7/1/12

I’ve neglected to post about the garden very much lately. I write blog posts in my head as I walk around the yard, but my big project this summer is painting the outside of our house. Maybe I’ll share photos another day. This means the garden is slightly weedy and greens are in need of re-seeding but we’re still enjoying harvests. I haven’t taken an overview photo since the beginning of June.

In the past two weeks we’ve been eating a lot of snow peas. I need to blanch and freeze some of what is in the refrigerator.

The kale is also doing well. We’ve already harvested more kale this year (4 lbs) than last year all together (3.4 lbs). I’m not sure how that’s happened, but it’s great. Maybe we’re just eating it more year round. Every time I pick some, I check a few days later and there’s more to pick. I also need to freeze some of this.

This week I harvested the first broccoli. It’s a sprouting type (Piracicaba) so the first head isn’t large at all. It only was 2 oz all together. But soon I’ll need to start harvesting the shoots almost daily like the peas to keep on top of the tender side shoots.

When you see it in the basket, you can see it’s real size.

The garlic scapes were starting to straighten at the base and get a bit tougher so I harvested them all. I’ll make pesto with some, chop and freeze others, and others will keep in the refrigerator for quite a while. This was over 3 lbs of scapes.

Year to Date Harvests: 30.16 lbs
